ALP Trend Watch Challenge: Half and Half

Hey, awesome ladies! Tracey Fox here. I’m so excited to share that I’ll be guest posting here on occasion to issue some fun scrappy challenges based on trends I’ve been noticing around the scraposphere.

For our first challenge, let’s try a design concept I’m seeing everywhere right now. I have a hunch that the traveler’s notebook trend is influencing scrapbook layouts lately in lots of different ways, and one way in particular is though designs where scrapbook pages are visually “split” in half vertically. Just like the pages of a traveler’s notebook!

For this layout about my husband’s birthday last year, I couldn’t choose between these two bold patterned papers for the background, so I decided to follow this trend and just use them both in equal amounts — half and half style. I layered up my photos, some other papers, a tag and a few embellishments toward the right side of the layout, but I let these elements overlap the seam for interest.

I’ve also seen great layouts in this style that keep everything to one side without the two sides overlapping. It’s just a matter of preference in deciding what will work best for each individual project.

There are lots of ways to try out this design trend. Here are a few ideas:

  • Place patterned paper on just one half of the background of your scrapbook layout and leave the other a solid color or neutral — or choose two different patterns for each half like I did on my page. It can be a great way to show off one or two bold patterns from your paper stash.
  • Place the majority of your photos, patterned papers, and embellishments on just one half of a layout. Add a little something to the other side for balance (like I did with my title and overlapping), or don’t! It’s entirely up to you.
  • Divide your page in half with washi tape, paper strips, stitching, embellishments, or even paint or other mixed media.
  • Create a double-page spread in a traveler’s notebook or other type of book that is already bound. The seam down the middle creates a “half and half” look automatically!
  • Try dividing your page or project horizontally or diagonally instead of vertically to mix it up.
  • Remember that the dividing line can be very prominent, or it could just be subtly implied through your design choices.

I’d love to see you give this challenge a try! All through the month of February, upload a project to the gallery on this post, or share your project on Instagram using the hashtag #alptrendwatch in addition to the usual #awesomeladies #feministscrapbooking and #theawesomeladiesproject hashtags. Feel free to tag me (@scrappylikeafox) in your post so I see your creations right away!

Have you spotted a scrappy trend lately while surfing blogs, galleries, or Instagram? I’d love for you to tell me what you see. It could be a theme, motif, product, technique, design trend — anything!  Send me a message in the Awesome Ladies Community (@scrappylikeafox) so we can chat about it, and it might end up as a future challenge here at The Awesome Ladies Project.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
