Silhouette photography is all about getting your lighting right.
It's easiest to capture silhouettes around sunrise and sunset when your biggest light source (the sun) is right around the horizon.
Silhouettes do not have to have that absolutely 100% black part, you can show a little bit of a color gradient (like mine above), especially if it helps tell your story.
Photos where your black part is more distinct (a tree with multiple sprawling branches instead of a poofy shrub) are going to come out better than if your black part is just kind of amorphous.
